International Council of Ophthalmology Fellowship

Introduction: The International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) Fellowship Program was organised to help promising young ophthalmologists from developing countries improve their practical skills and broaden their perspectives of ophthalmology.   The International Council of Ophthalmology works with ophthalmologic societies and others to enhance ophthalmic education and improve access to the highest quality eye care in order to preserve and restore vision for the people of the world.

International Council of Ophthalmology Funding Value:

ICO-Retina Research Foundation Helmerich Fellowships

  •    Award: US$33,000 for one year to cover round-trip travel, living expenses, and professional expenses.
  • Application deadline: September 30, with applicants notified by November 30.
  • Three 12-month fellowships are awarded each year to commence within 15 months after award notification.
  • Open for training in any subspecialty.

 

ICO Three-Month Fellowships

    •    Award:  US$6000 (maximum) to cover travel and living expenses for three months.  The exact amount is subject to actual student-style living expenses in the host country.
    • Approximately 60 three-month fellowships are awarded each year.

International Council of Ophthalmology Funding Eligibility:

  • Fellows are expected to bring the acquired knowledge and skills back to their home countries and take part in programs to preserve vision and prevent blindness.
  • ICO-Retina Research Foundation Helmerich Fellowships
    This fellowship provides support for one year of ophthalmology training in any subspecialty.  

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be from a developing country.
  • Applicant must be under 40 years of age at the time of applying.
  • He or she must be a graduate of an ophthalmology residency training program.
  • He or she must be recommended by the ophthalmology head of a teaching institution or public service hospital in a developing country.
  • Applicant must be accepted for ophthalmology subspecialty fellowship, one year in duration, at an advanced ophthalmology training centre.
  • Applicant must be reasonably fluent in the language of the fellowship training centre.
  • He or she must be committed to returning to a position at a teaching institution or public service hospital in the fellow’s home country.

Three-Month Fellowships

 These fellowships provide young ophthalmologists from developing countries with exposure to and training in several subspecialties in ophthalmology.  

Requirements:

  • Residency training must be completed before applying for the fellowship.
  • Specialist exam in ophthalmology must be successfully passed.
  • Applicant must be under 40 years of age at the time of applying.
  • Applicant must return to home country after the training, resume previous positions, and apply the knowledge gained during the fellowship.
  • Applicant must be reasonably fluent in the language of the fellowship training centre.

 Deadlines: March/September/october.
